How To Become A Real Estate Agent
Real Estate Agents have the job of bringing together buyers and sellers and getting the best deal possible for both of them. You will never please all of the people, all of the time, but this is the uphill task which Real Estate Agents face every single day.
So what qualities do you need to be a successful real estate agent?
- Hardworking - now we all know that in the boom times the property business is very lucrative and a great way to make a living, but there's always a flip side. Bust follows boom which means that only the strongest will survive. When the property market gets a bit sticky it's only the hard working real estate agents which can make the sale. Does that sound like you?
- Negotiator - are you a good negotiator? Can you speak comfortably with people from all walks of life. Do you have the necessary social and communication skills? Like we've already said, Real Estate Agents have to try to keep everybody happy and get the best deal possible for everyone concerned. If you're not sure whether this is really up your street, so to speak, there are some short communication and personality development courses available which will help you to decide. You might find out some surprising traits about yourself!
- School - enrol in a good real estate school within your area. In some states you can become a Real Estate Agent from the age of 18 years, in others you'll have to wait until you're 21 - check it out where you live. You might not think that you need to go to school to be able to sell real estate but it is highly recommended. It's not as easy as you might think. Apart from negotiating with sellers and buyers you do need to be aware of lots of different laws and terminologies.
- License - after you've completed your schooling you will need to apply for a license from the Real Estate Licensing Commission (RELC). They'll do some checks into your background to make sure that you're of "good character", after all, you will be handling large sums of money as well as confidential information.
- Experience - once you've passed the relevant courses and gained your license, you're still not a Real Estate Agent, the next thing you need is some real time experience. You will need to locate a real estate agency who is looking for new recruits, and then persuade them that you're the right person for the job. If you have the right skills you shouldn't find it too difficult to get someone to take you on, using your newly honed powers of communication.
